Retainers

Getting a retainer is like getting a trophy for all the hard work you put into your braces. To keep that smile looking awesome, you’ve got to treat your retainer like a VIP.

Here is a simple guide to help you stay on track!

🦷 1. Wear It Like a Pro

  • Follow the Schedule: Your orthodontist will tell you when to wear it (usually every night). If you skip a night, your teeth might try to “sneak” back to where they used to be!
  • In or Out: It should either be in your mouth or in its case. Never put it in a napkin or your pocket—that’s how retainers accidentally end up in the trash or broken.

🧼 2. Keep It Squeaky Clean

  • The Toothbrush Trick: Every time you brush your teeth, brush your retainer too! Use a soft toothbrush and a little bit of clear liquid soap or just cool water.
  • No “Hot Tubs”: Never use hot water. It can melt the plastic and warp the shape. Stick to cool or lukewarm water.
  • Deep Clean: Once a week, ask a parent to help you soak it in a special retainer cleaning tablet to kill the extra germs.

🚫 3. The “Never” List

  • No Eating: Always take your retainer out before you eat or drink anything except plain water.
  • Keep Away from Pets: Dogs love the smell of retainers and will chew them like a toy. Keep your case high up and closed!
  • Don’t Flip It: It’s tempting to flip the retainer around with your tongue, but this can bend the wires and make it stop fitting.

📅 4. Check the Fit

  • If your retainer feels too tight, or if it pokes your gums, tell a grown-up right away so they can call the orthodontist.

Pro-Tip: The “Look Before You Toss” Rule

Before you leave the cafeteria or a restaurant, always double-check your tray or the table to make sure your retainer case is in your bag!
